About Signs

01

What is Signs?

Signs is a platform that enables anyone to learn ASL and contribute to the creation of a growing database of sign language videos. Whether you're new to ASL or already proficient, Signs offers real-time feedback and an opportunity to share your knowledge. This helps expand the platform's resources, making ASL learning more comprehensive and accessible.

02

Our Vision

At Signs, we believe in community-powered learning. Those familiar with ASL can contribute videos, helping create a continuously expanding dataset. This ensures that as the platform grows, so does the variety of signs available to learners.

03

Who is this for?

Signs is for two key groups:
Learners: Those new to ASL can benefit from our AI-driven guidance, which provides real-time feedback using a 3D avatar.

Contributors: Anyone, both those who are experienced or just getting started with ASL can upload videos of their signs, helping to create a dataset of videos of Signs.

04

Our Partners

NVIDIA leads the project, developing the open ASL dataset in collaboration with American Society for Deaf Children. Hello Monday/DEPT®, the creators of Fingerspelling.xyz, is responsible for building the platform, utilizing AI to facilitate real-time learning and data collection.

FAQ

01

Why did you create Signs?

NVIDIA and Hello Monday/DEPT® believe everyone has the right to expression. At the same time, NVIDIA and Hello Monday/DEPT® recognize that some communities lack equitable access to means of expression. We created this platform primarily to help teach hearing parents that may not know how to sign, connect and communicate with Deaf children and family members. We see this as an opportunity to use AI for Good, to teach and engage the Deaf community meaningfully.

NVIDIA is also collecting this dataset to enable others to build accessible technology for the Deaf community. To this end, NVIDIA plans to make this dataset public and broadly available to enable third-parties to develop applications that can be instructive and helpful for this shared purpose.

02

The platform is mostly focused on hand and finger positions—what about non-manual signals and markers?

The dataset we are building primarily and initially focuses on accurately capturing data for hand and finger positions for each sign. However, we recognize that ASL is a rich and nuanced language where non-manual signals, such as facial expressions and head movements, play a crucial role in conveying meaning. We are also aware of regional and cultural variations in signing and are seeking to incorporate input from a wide audience to demonstrate native and commonly accepted signs. While our current dataset focuses initially on hands and fingers, we are thinking about how we might expand and incorporate non-manual signals using technologies like face tracking or other motion-capture methods. This would allow for a more comprehensive understanding of ASL in future iterations.

03

Who can contribute?

To reflect the diversity and breadth of the community, anyone regardless of ASL proficiency that consents to the disclosure can contribute.

04

How will the data in the dataset be verified for accuracy?

This is a project that is for the community and by the community. Each submission will undergo verification by Deaf individuals and certified interpreters to ensure that the hand and finger positions, as well as their movements, are accurate and proficient. For additional details about the inclusion of non-manual signals, refer to the section "The platform is mostly focused on hand/finger positions—what about non-manual signals and markers?"

05

What is the purpose of the Learn section?

The Learn section is designed to introduce users to some of the most important and commonly used signs in ASL. This section aims to provide a foundational understanding of the language and how hand and finger movements are critical in conveying meaning. There are also different levels that learners can select to advance their understanding and comprehension.

05

Who is the target audience for the Learn section?

The Learn section is tailored for beginners or those starting their journey with ASL. It offers an interactive and engaging way to learn, providing an alternative to traditional text-based or video resources. With these initial signs, users will gain a basic understanding of ASL’s structure and the importance of precise hand and finger movements. While this platform offers a starting point, it’s important to note that ASL is a rich and advanced language, and there is much more to explore beyond this introduction.

06

Has the Deaf community been involved in building this?

Yes. The American Society for Deaf Children has been involved in the development of this platform. Additionally, all signs are verified by both Deaf individuals and certified interpreters to ensure cultural and linguistic proficiency.

07

What is the American Society for Deaf Children’s role?

The American Society for Deaf Children provides guidance and expertise to ensure that the platform aligns with the needs and values of the Deaf community. The American Society for Deaf Children is helping verify and validate inputs on the Signs platform.

08

When will the dataset be released?

We will start releasing in the second half of 2025.

08

What is NVIDIA’s role?

NVIDIA is the data collector, leading the effort to collect and annotate videos of those contributing to the Signs platform.

09

What is Hello Monday/DEPT®’s role?

Hello Monday/DEPT® is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the Signs platform. Their team ensures that the interface is accessible, user-friendly, and engaging, making ASL learning and sign contributions an intuitive experience for all users.
